Employer description

IRD is a multidisciplinary French public research organization that, for nearly 80 years, has been committed to equitable partnerships with countries in the South and in the French Overseas Territories. A player on the international development agenda, its priorities are in line with the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Together, scientists and the Institute's partners propose concrete solutions to the global challenges facing societies and the planet. This win-win relationship makes science and innovation major levers for development. The Institut is under the dual authority of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research and the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs.

The organization you will be joining

LEMAR (UMR 6539) brings together ecologists, biologists, microbiologists, biogeochemists, chemists, physicists, environmental lawyers and economists, with the aim of understanding and modeling marine systems within the biosphere, defining the characteristics of the environment and organisms, and deciphering their interactions. The research themes of the DISCOVERY team, to which the position is attached, focus on the adaptability and resilience of coastal ecosystems to global change at different temporal and spatial scales. Within this framework, the team focuses on the study of populations and communities, their habitats and associated socio-ecological functions, with a view to understanding habitat/biodiversity relationships and the functioning of socio-ecosystems, for predictive purposes in planning, management, restoration and conservation in the face of global change. Your position will be funded by the ANR BRIDGES-IMPACT project of the PEPR BRIDGES (2023-2033), which focuses on the transformation of marine socio-ecosystems in the southwest Indian Ocean. BRIDGES-IMPACT brings together an interdisciplinary team mainly composed of researchers from IRD, INRAe and CNRS, with the participation of researchers from La Réunion, Mayotte and several other partner organizations. The project aims to develop and implement methods to measure and amplify the impacts of the BRIDGES PEPR in order to transform and improve the sustainability of marine socio-ecosystems in the south-west Indian Ocean around fisheries and conservation issues (e.g. marine protected areas). The project is structured into five main axes/work packages, and this internship will contribute to WP1 (conceptual framework of the determinants of scientific impact on transformations).

An attractive assignment

Under the joint responsibility of Adrien Comte, Research Fellow at IRD (UMR LEMAR) and Georgeta Stoïca, Senior Lecturer at the University of Mayotte, your mission will be to conduct a review of the advantages and disadvantages of existing frameworks, methods and information sets that can help shed light on the determinants of scientific impact on the sustainable transformation of marine socio-ecosystems. More specifically, you will conduct a systematic literature review on impact assessments of research projects to inform the design of a sustainability transformation assessment framework (“transformation pathways”). This literature review will form the basis of an international workshop to be held in 2025.

Your future team

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary, international BRIDGES-IMPACT scientific team, comprising sustainability scientists, economists, anthropologists and specialists in systematic literature reviews. These interactions and collaborations will involve French and international researchers (metropolitan France, French overseas territories and southern countries), as well as institutional partners in the Indian Ocean region (e.g. marine park managers, fisheries or conservation associations or organizations).

The profile we're looking for

You have the following skills: You are a self-starter with a strong taste for teamwork in an international, interdisciplinary and multicultural research environment. You are currently studying for a Master 2 or engineering degree in marine and coastal geography, political science, environmental economics or agronomy.
